A Lifelong Mission of Impact

1. The Water Crisis & The "Handpump Man of Bihar" (2004–Present)

Vivek Kumar Kalyan is a well known social worker based in Bodhgaya, Bihar. He is prominently recognized across the state as the " Chapakal Man" (Handpump Man) of the Bihar for his scarcity by installing thousands of free water pumps. He serves as the Chairman of the Siddhartha Compassion Trust Bodhgaya.

Gaya is historically known as a drought-prone area, making its rural communities highly vulnerable to serve water scarcity. During his school and college days, Vivek was deeply impacted by witnessing the daily struggles of local women and children who had to trek long distances just to fetch basic drinking water.

Motivated to create a sustainable solution, he initiated a lifelong mission:

·       The Journey Begins (2004): Vivek installed his very first clean-water handpump in Chhachh village, Bodh Gaya.

·       Regional Expansion: His efforts quickly expanded to neighboring villages, including Hathiyar, Bakraur, Silaunja, and Bataspur.

·       State-Wide Scale: Over the last two decades, his mission grew to cover the Sherghati sub-division of the Gaya district and expanded into north Bihar districts like Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, and Sitamarhi—eventually reaching as far as Raxaul near the India-Nepal border.

·       The Impact Today:  Having started his mission at just 20 Years old, Vivek has successfully installed over 2,000 free handpumps in approximately 500 villages across the state.

"Water scarcity is a bigger problem than most resources. It is a matter of survival. Those having to struggle to get water must be bailed out of the problem."

                                                                                            — Vivek Kumar Kalyan

How the Water Mission Operates:

·       Family Roots: The installation cost of a single handpump ranges from ₹20,000 to ₹70,000–₹80,000, depending on the depth of the water table. Initially, Vivek bore these expenses entirely with the backing of his large joint family, which comprises 65 members. With almost all the adults running successful independent businesses in Bodh Gaya, the family wholeheartedly appreciated and funded his vision.

·       Self-Reliant Maintenance: Rather than relying on government or district officials for support, Vivek manages his own dedicated team of plumbers. This team not only installs new systems but also actively repairs and restores defunct public handpumps across the villages.

2. COVID-19 Relief & The "Oxygen Man of Bihar" (2020–2021)

During the devastating second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic faced catastrophic oxygen shortages, he personally distributed free Oxygen cylinders to isolated rural patients, saving numerous lives when hospital beds were unavailable. Witnessing many impoverished villagers dying simply because they could not afford treatment or travel to urban hospitals, Vivek pivoted to frontline emergency relief.

·       Free Life Support: He began sourcing and providing oxygen cylinders completely free of charge to critically ill patients in home isolation across the villages of Bodh Gaya and wider Bihar.

·       A New Lease on Life: By personally delivering oxygen to those who had been left behind by the medical system, he became a true "angel" to distressed patients and families in their darkest hours, earning the permanent moniker "Oxygen Man of Bihar."
